Cross laminated timber offers a faster way to build that is remarkably cost-effective. Working together with JC-A we developed cost-effective student housing solutions for various colleges and universities. A variety of unit types and floor configurations were designed for optimum dimensional widths, lengths and spans of cross-laminated timber (CLT) for off-site fabrication. The goals were to reduce material waste, control costs, and offer adaptable building arrangements to suit different site locations, building heights, and a variety of sustainable exterior cladding options.

Building Features
Sustainable Development Goals
Global SDGs to build a network of universities, colleges, research centres, and knowledge institutions align with the mass timber movement to promote practical solutions for sustainable residential developments using natural, renewable, sustainably harvested materials.
Climate Change
Substituting conventional building materials for mass timber reduces construction phase C02 emissions by 69%. Mass timber used in half of the expected new urban construction could provide as much as 9% of global emissions reductions needed to meet 2030 targets for keeping global warming below 1.5 °C. (i)
Fast and Affordable
Optimized CLT design incorporates manufacturing efficiencies that help drive down costs. Build higher quality, higher performance student residences cost competitively against traditional forms of construction. Prefabricated mass timber components reduce the construction schedule to generate additional, significant savings.
