Administration Building, Industrial Facility and Warehouse

A Mass Timber Showcase of Sustainability

As part of their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, Enbridge – one of North American’s largest utility companies chose mass timber to build their new 55,000 square foot, 2-storey office building in Ottawa using Element5-supplied cross-laminated timber (CLT) and Glulam.

With a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, Enbridge identified modernization and innovation of its facilities, along with investment in renewable and low-carbon infrastructure, as key pathways toward this commitment.

Zero Carbon Building Certification

The use of mass timber for the superstructure was the primary factor in the building earning Zero Carbon Building Design certification, complemented by a range of efficient technologies, including:

  • Geothermal energy systems for heating and cooling
  • Ground-source heat pumps
  • Triple-glazed windows
  • Fibreglass-framed curtain walls

Beyond sustainability, another key objective was to create a beautiful and welcoming workplace for administrative and field staff. With abundant natural light, tall ceilings, and large open spaces, the design emphasizes comfort and productivity. The Operations Centre is a true multi-purpose facility – in addition to office space, it features bench seating areas, flexible workspaces, specialized technical training rooms, an industrial facility and warehouse and a five-acre operations yard.

Results and Recognition

By successfully integrating sustainable design elements within budget, the Ottawa Operations Centre demonstrates Enbridge’s commitment to environmental responsibility and employee wellbeing while meeting the diverse needs of its workforce.

  • Project completion: November 2024
  • Zero Carbon Building certification: May 2025 (Canada Green Building Council)
