Mass Timber Provides Warmth, Sense of Well-Being

Providing Crisis Services Grounded in Cultural Practices

Located within the Wasauksing First Nation territory in Ontario, this 10,813 sq. ft. facility purpose will provide crisis services grounded in cultural practices to women, children, men and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals who are victims of domestic and intimate partner violence. As such, creating a secure, welcoming environment that also instilled a strong sense of safety was the project’s highest priority.

The building consists of two distinct wings – one residential, and one for back-of-house operations – arranged around a protected internal courtyard. The shelter’s design combines traditional Indigenous architectural elements alongside modern amenities to ensure comfort and security.

Mass Timber Provides Warmth and a Sense of Well-Being

To evoke a sense of peace and to honor traditional Indigenous building practices, the facility incorporates natural wood materials. Exposed Glulam columns and beams define key communal spaces such as the entrance, administrative core, and entrance canopy, while an extended wood canopy offers shelter from the elements.

Embracing the principles of healing and wellness, the shelter features:

  • Communal spaces
  • Courtyard
  • Wraparound support through counselling and advocacy
  • Access to programs aimed at fostering and strengthening cultural identity.

The safe house will be available to community members and individuals from nearby communities.

Through thoughtful design and the integration of cultural principles, including the use of natural materials, the Women’s Safe Home stands as a symbol of protection, healing, and community, providing a safe and supportive environment for those in need.
