Orillia Waterfront Centre

The innovative wood building is a beacon for boaters and the community

The Orillia Waterfront Centre serves as a beacon for the community around the picturesque Couchiching Lake park and marina. The pavilion serves as a beacon for the community and features a lightbox sitting atop the community lounge. At night, the lightbox glows like a lantern on the waterfront – drawing the public towards its warm wood interior.

A popular amenity for the residents of Orillia and a thoroughfare for visiting boaters, the building boasts a CLT, glulam, and glass lounge offering scenic views along the water’s edge. The building provides private services to boaters while also serving the general community – its inviting interior has attracted yoga classes, seniors’ exercise, art display, team bonding, municipal festivals, and weddings. Solid Planning Helped Speed Installation – Mass Timber Structure Erected in One Day

  • The Centre was the first building to use cross-laminated timber (CLT) in Ontario.
  • Installation was expected to take longer than it did. Instead of four days, the CLT and Glulam structure was erected in just one day.
  • CLT led to further efficiencies in construction as it is used in this case both as structure and as interior finish.

“The CLT panels arrived prepared with proper lifting points, so they were easy to set in place with the crane, with considerable accuracy. In fact, we found that with the team, everything was very methodical, very precise and very accurate.” – said Jim Storey, President and Project Manager of GC Bradanick Construction

This design-build project was a joint partnership that Element5 was pleased to be a part of. This 2017 project was Element5’s first successful solution-sale and included design and engineering consulting, 3D modelling, fabrication and supply of the mass timber and related components.

“The Orillia Waterfront Centre will serve as a beacon, drawing boaters from the Trent Severn Waterway to Orillia as well as drawing residents and visitors to our beautiful waterfront,” said Kent Guptill, Director of Facilities and Special Projects for the City of Orillia. “The design of the building and its surrounding civic space creates a destination for residents and visitors that will help revitalize the downtown, while also providing a dynamic space for year-round enjoyment.”
