affordable housing and climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8220;Climate change and housing affordability are on a collision course, and we\u2019re going to need to think differently about how we build our communities across the country.&#8221; How Wood can Spur Canada&#8217;s Green Building Drive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>RBC&#8217;s Climate Action Institute also put together a comprehensive report called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/timber-rising-how-wood-can-spur-canadas-green-building-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/timber-rising-how-wood-can-spur-canadas-green-building-drive\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timber Rising &#8211; How Wood can Spur Canada&#8217;s Green Building Drive<\/a>&#8221; which documents how Canada can tap into our forestry resources to create a global market for mass timber &#8211; that can potentially replace concrete and steel or dramatically cut their use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report states that Canada could become a world leader in sustainable construction if the country shifts to mass timber for buildings &#8211; something we certainly agree with and Element5 was happy to contribute to this report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/elementfive.co\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RBC-TimberRising-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"614\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/elementfive.co\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RBC-TimberRising-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elementfive.co\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RBC-TimberRising-logo.jpg 614w, https:\/\/elementfive.co\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RBC-TimberRising-logo-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/elementfive.co\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/RBC-TimberRising-logo-516x400.jpg 516w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Takeaways from Report<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The building sector is the 3rd most carbon intensive industry in Canada, accounting for 13% of all emissions in 2022, or 92 million tonnes (MT) of CO2e. <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Widespread adoption of wood, specifically mass timber, as a substitute or complement to concrete and steel could cut embodied emissions in buildings by as much as 25%.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mass timber deployment in new apartments, condos, and office towers could cut emissions by at least 9MT, or nearly 10% of the sector\u2019s emissions, by 2030.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aside from emissions savings, greater use of mass timber in building construction could conservatively grow the mass timber market by $1 billion by 2030. <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Addressing the cost of construction and occupancy insurance, and mismatch between supply and demand is essential before Canada can achieve emissions savings, economic, and job growth opportunities.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canada has all the puzzle pieces required to become a global leader in mass timber.
